REVEREND COOPER WILLYAMS

Cooper Willyams' A VOYAGE UP THE MEDITERRANEAN

Reverend Cooper Willyams (1762-1816) was ship's chaplain  on
the Swiftsure, a vessel in Lord Horatio Nelson's squadron  in the
Mediterranean.  Willyams was a noted topographer and artist, as well as minister and chaplain. The son of a British naval commander, he went to Cambridge, was ordained and contributed to "Topographical Miscellanies" before first going to sea as Chaplain on the Boyne in 1793. England was at war with  revolutionary France, and the Boyne participated in the West Indies' action  of that war. In 1796, Willyams returned to London and published An Account of the Campaign in the West Indies. Six years later he would again set sail  with Nelson's fleet.

Book Description

A VOYAGE UP THE MEDITERRANEAN IN HIS MAJESTY'S SHIP THE SWIFTSURE by Rev. Cooper Willyams. Published by T. Bensley
for J. White, London, 1802.

The book's subject matter emphasizes Willyams' eyewitness description of Horatio Nelson's Battle of the Nile, 1798. The Dedication page is to Lord St. John Vincent with a glued engraving of the Admiral firmly attached. The book has 43 plates which are sepia in color. 309 pages. The size from front cover is 274mm x 230mm x 40mm thick.

Condition

The original cover of this classic primary source (205 years old) has general rubbing and some scuffs. No dust jacket as issued. The book's spine and corners are bound in calf's skin. The end pages are a colorful marbleized pattern. There are no loose pages, missing pages, or badly marked or ripped pages. There is 1 small penciled notation on blank front leaf that reads "18/6/" followed by the words "a fine print of Vincent indented" in copperplate pencil. The pages are not bright white as are modern books but more a beige off-white tone.  Little foxing is found. The sheet with  the engraving of Lord Vincent has a small tear in margin only--it does not reach the engraving. Two engravings, those between Sheets 26 and 27 and Sheets 244 and 245, have a mark at  bottom of page not affecting the drawings. These small marks are identical and appear to have possibly occurred in  the original printing process. Some of the prints have speckling in the bottom edge areas. Almost all pages are clean as seen in above photos.
